Most parents just want their children to be happy, healthy, safe and successful in life. As parents, it can difficult to witness the “failures” of our children. There is an inexplicable need for us to step in and save them. This is of course something that is essential to their survival when they are young. As they get older, it can often be difficult to navigate the “release of responsibility”. During parent coaching, I take the time to acknowledge where parents are coming from, normalizing and validating some of the frustrations that come with watching older children struggle, and experience failure. I teach parents tools and strategies that allow them to let go of the power struggle around academics, and refocus on the parent-child relationship.
